How Can Your Diet to Lower Cholesterol?

Most of us know the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy diet.  But there is more to it than simply getting our five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.  If we plan things right we can make big steps towards having lower cholesterol – simply by choosing the right foods to help us towards that goal.

If someone were to ask you which foods you should be eating to reduce your cholesterol levels, you would probably immediately say low fat foods and perhaps those fruits and veggies we talked about earlier.  You’d be right of course – but there is more to it than that.  Simply eating foods that are low fat isn’t enough – you have to know whether those low levels are still down to saturated fats or not.

Ideally you want to eat more foods that have mono or polyunsaturated fats in them.  Saturated fats help to raise your levels of bad cholesterol – and that’s the last thing you want to achieve.  This just goes to show how important it is to choose foods that have certain ingredients in them.  If you do this you can figure out how to successfully lower cholesterol in your bloodstream.

The problem is that you may not have heard of all these ingredients, never mind be aware of the foods that contain them.  For example how much do you know about coenzyme Q10?  Most people will probably never have heard of this, and yet it can have marked effects on the health of your heart and circulatory system.  Oily fish such as sardines and mackerel have this in them, as well as so called organ meats such as liver and kidneys.  If you introduce these into your diet on a regular basis you’ll be combating that bad cholesterol in a good way.

Sometimes it isn’t just changing your diet that can have such a good effect on reducing your cholesterol levels.  It can be good to receive a boost in other ways as well, such as by taking a supplement.  These are great because you can simply take a couple of tablets with your high fiber bran breakfast in the mornings.  This gives you the peace of mind of knowing you have taken the right things to help reduce your cholesterol levels and keep them down.

Don’t take this as a sign that you don’t have to bother with a healthy diet though.  If you use a supplement designed to help reduce your levels of cholesterol in conjunction with a healthy diet aimed at the same goal, you will get a doubly protective benefit that is really hard to beat.  Nothing will completely protect you from heart disease or the danger of strokes, but this will certainly go a long way towards doing just that.

So take a fresh look at your diet today.  Is it helping the levels of cholesterol in your body or making them worse?  Once you know how to lower cholesterol you’ll have some weapons to combat it with.
