A national initiative to help lower high cholesterol

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – Did you know, Louisiana has the 5th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease?

According to the American Heart Association, 38% of adults have high cholesterol, and a common cause of the disease is, in fact, high cholesterol.

Out of the more than 72,000 people in Louisiana who have cardiovascular disease, nearly 73% have high or bad cholesterol.

While many people may be able to reduce their cholesterol through diet, or exercise, those who have experienced a previous heart attack or stroke and still have high cholesterol, despite current treatment may require additional help.

As part of a national initiative to lower the high statistics of cardiovascular disease, AMGEN, a program called Cholesterol 911.

It focuses on fighting heart disease by informing the public of all of the risks.
